This is the presentation made by Chris Stephenson for the 2001 BEIT conference.
Building Deaf Community in Cyberspace: A Case Study of a Deaf Listserve
This presentation on a study of telecommunications use by deaf people was given at the American Educational Research Association in 1998. It was based on a paper by the same name which was awarded the Best Paper Award by the Research on Education of Deaf Persons Special Interest Group.
The Text of New Relationships: Building deaf Community in Cyberspace
The presentation on the use of telecommunications to build communities was given at the Rochester Institute of Technology Conference on Communication, Technology and Cultural Values in 1997. It was based on a paper by the same name which was awarded the Best Conference Paper Award.
Equity Begins with Recognizing Diversity
The presentation exploring issues of equity and technology was given at IBM's CASCON Conference in 2000 as part of the focus on women and technology.
An Introduction to the Computer Studies Courses
The presentation explores the new Ontario Computer Studies Curriculum, including Computer and Information Science and Computer Engineering. It looks at new course content, resources and teaching strategies. It was given at the CCEast Conference in 2000.
Teaching Social Impact and Career Preparation
The presentation explores strategies for addressing new computer studies curriculum expectations relating to the social impact of technology and career preparation. It was one of a series of lectures given at the University of Waterloo Computer Science Summer Institute in 2000.
Teaching Problem Solving and Design
The presentation explores the link between teaching problem solving and design and computer programming. It looks at a number of models of problem solving and explores what it is students need to know. It was one of a series of lectures given at the University of Waterloo Computer Science Summer Institute in 2000.

Papers

A Report on High School Computer Science Education in Five U.S. States
This paper provides the results of an extensive study of computer science education in five U.S. States. It examines hardware use and selection criteria, grade-based programming language use and selection criteria, instructional resources and professional development opportunities. This study was funded by IBM.
Language Choice and Key Concepts in CS 1
This paper reports on a survey of over 900 post-secondary institutions in North America which offer Introductory Computer Science courses. It looks at course descriptions, key concepts taught, current programming language used, future programming language choice and selection criteria. This paper was published in the Journal of Research on Computing Education, Vol. 31 (1), Fall 1998.
